In 1987 she was named by the Washington Post as a Teacher of the Year in the Washington DC area. No obituary or award could ever have captured the huge personality that was Susie.  She was one of GC's really memorable and extraordinary characters.  As an English teacher, her standards were the highest.  As a human being, her love for her students and teaching came first and foremost.  As a reader and writer she possessed, as those who knew and loved her know, the most colorful vocabulary--much of it unprintable here-- and a straightforward approach to life and honesty that was rare on this earth."  (Obituary)
