The late Dorothy Deane Ferguson 1938 was among women honored in March by Congress with the Congressional Gold Medal for their service during World War II. The Congressional Gold Medal is, along with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award bestowed by the United States. The gold medal is awarded by Congress, the Medal of Freedom by the president.
Ferguson was among about 1,900 women who served in the Women Airforce Pilots Service, better known as WASPs, and that service's two predecessor organizations, between 1942 and the unit's disbanding in December 1944. These women flew U.S. military aircraft in non-combat roles, such as ferrying aircraft from factories to military bases, or towing drones or targets for training. Their service freed male pilots for combat duty. They flew more than 12,000 aircraft of 78 different types, from experimental jet fighters to the heaviest bombers and cargo craft. Thirty-eight were killed, 11 in training and the rest on active duty.
Dorothy Deane Ferguson flew primarily BT-13 and BT-15 aircraft, which were used in the second of three training stages for novice pilots. After the war, according to nephew William H. "Trip" Ferguson of Newport News, Va., Ferguson lived in the Georgetown section of Washington, D.C., where she developed real estate, founded Woman's Life Insurance of America and furthered her education, earning J.D. and Ph.D. degrees. She died in 1992. Ferguson's mother was Ada Myrtle Deane 1912, and her sister was Mary Pat Ferguson (Hybl) 1948.
George A. Delamater 1968, Bunnell, Fla. provided the following update: "I transferred to Eastern (Baptist) College, St. David’s, Pa., to major in Sociology-Anthropology in the fall of 1965. I transferred to Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas, the fall of 1967 to major in Bible. I was ordained to ministry in the Churches of Christ Jan. 1, 1969. I graduated from A.C.U. in August 1969 with a B.A. and preached part-time in the Northeast U.S., where I continued to substitute teach in public schools, after working as a social worker for the government and eventually preached full time for 8 1/2 years and part time again for over 5 years. Health considerations brought early retirement on disability and relocation to Florida in 2003. I would like to renew acquaintance with anyone in classes 1965-1968. I have been single officially again since October 2000. Since I live alone, I have time to correspond by e-mail, U.S. mail, or by phone. P.S. Does anyone know the current name or address of Lee Ann Garred, Steve Knitter, or friends from the pre-ministerial fraternity Kappa Chi, or the Wesley club at U.N.C. at Greensboro? God’s blessings on all."
William A. Powell 2006, Greensboro, has been married to his wife, Jessie, for three years on July 7, 2010. They have two boys: Ashton is 10 years old and William Jr. turned 1 on Feb. 10. William is a personal trainer at Julie Luther's PurEnergy in Greensboro. He is also the youth pastor and worship leader at "The Kirk" church which meets at the Spears Family YMCA. William explains: "After graduating from Greensboro College in 2006 I have truly seen how the Lord has been in the details of my life. I really enjoy the work that I do and give all the credit to my Savior Jesus Christ."
Joel J. Motsinger 2009, Winston-Salem, accepted the position as the scheduling coordinator with Metro Nursing, Inc., a home health-care company, in Winston-Salem in October 2009.
