Greensboro College Alumni PrideNotes, February 2011

General Announcements

Margaret Harry Kluttz 1965, Salisbury, has recently been elected as the new chairwoman of the Blanche and Julian Robertson Family Foundation board of directors. Kluttz is a current trustee of Greensboro College and also chairs the Institutional Advancement Committee. To read more about Kluttz's new opportunity, click here.

Tonya Dean Fowler 1995, High Point, has been hired as the Managing Director of The Arc of Southside. At the Arc, Fowler will provide services and be an advocate for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Read more about her new venture here.

Professor of Art O. Ray Martin, Liberty, has decided to take a short leave from his position at Greensboro College. He will be gone for the spring semester of 2011 in order to pursue other opportunities.

Helen Gibbs Philpott 1945, Winston Salem, died on Feb. 3, 2011. (obituary)

Mary Margaret Templeton McLaurin 1948, died Aug. 9, 2007. (obituary)

Sally High Langdon 1964, Reidsville, died on Feb. 21, 2011. (obituary)

Susan Johnson Parrish 1964, Smithfield, died Feb. 13, 2011. (obituary)

Edward O. Coleman Jr., Greensboro, died Feb. 14, 2011. Coleman taught in the English department at Greensboro College for 31 years before he retired. His son, David Coleman, graduated from GC in 1988. (obituary)

Nancy Zimmerman Proctor died Feb. 19, 2011. Proctor attended Greensboro College and also worked as the secretary to the Director of Financial Aid and Placement at GC. (obituary)

Sandra Mobley, Greensboro, died Feb. 7, 2011. Mobley worked in housekeeping at Greensboro College.

Paul "Robby" Wise 2006 of Birmingham AL, married Leah Morrison on Jan 1, 2011.



Births/Adoptions

Kyle M. Stein 2001 and Deborah Stein welcomed their first child Zoe Marie on Jan. 15, 2011. Zoe was 19.5 inches long and weighed 7 lbs 2 oz.

Shiloh Peace was born to Dana Hartman Grove 1999 and Stacy Grove of Washington, IL on Dec. 24, 2010. She is the third child, following brother Tanner, age 3, and sister Elisabeth, age 21 months.

General Announcements

Mildred Russell Smith 1940 of Troy has recently been moved into a skilled nursing home in Montgomery County, NC at 90 years of age.

Virginia Hurt Breeden 1945 of Virginia Beach, Va, responded to the January 2011 PrideLine with an e-mail informing us at GC that she has been in contact with her former roommate and classmate Jean Cherry Gillam 1945 of Windsor.

The Rev. Randolph W. Kanipe 1982, of Bogart, Ga., was appointed to Watkinsville First UMC in June 2010 after having been at Salem UMC for 8 years. In August, he earned his second-degree black belt. Kanipe was also inducted into the United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame for his ministry to community children in the "Karate Kids for Christ" organization. He is currently completing his doctoral studies at Asbury seminary in Lexington, Ky.

Stacy A. Jarvis 1999 of Belle Mead, N.J., recently received her master's degree in Chemistry from Lehigh University.

Ryan W. Nelsen 2000 from Altrincham, Cheshire, United Kingdom, recently signed a deal
with the Blackburn Rovers football (soccer) team of the Premiere League to remain as the team captain until 2013. Nelsen joined Blackburn in 2005 and captained his native New Zealand's national team in last year's World Cup. Just last month, he was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to football. Read more about Nelsen's great opportunity here.

Rev. Howard A. Chubbs, Greensboro, was the recipient of the 2011 Human Rights Medal Award on Feb 1, 2011. This honor is awarded annually by North Carolina A&T State University to recognize people who have endeavored to correct social injustice in their lifetimes. In the late 1960s, Rev. Chubbs stood by the side of then-A&T college president Dr. Lewis C. Dowdy as the National Guard marched onto the campus. Since then, he has made every effort to provide pastoral and civic contributions toward society, ultimately making this world a better place. Rev. Chubbs is a current Board of Visitors member at Greensboro College.
