General Announcements

Anne Parris Ogilvy 1994, Cumming, Ga, was named as the 2011 School Counselor of the Year for the state of Georgia. Ogilvy was also one of the six finalists in the running for the title of 2012 National School Counselor of the Year.

Shannon F. Brown 1997, Greensboro, is currently a Lateral Entry Specialist for Guilford County Schools. In Oct, the school district was awarded an almost 2 million dollar grant to recruit STEM teachers for the school system. Brown will serve as program director over this new venture within Guilford County Schools.

Patricia Raube Keller 1998, Mandan, Nd, completed her doctorate in Education Leadership from Rowan University on Dec. 16, 2011.

Steven P. Ashley 2002, Greensboro, was a featured speaker at the 2011 Internet Summit held in Raleigh on Nov 15-16, 2011. Ashley is the vice president of internet marketing for Market America/Shop.com.

John M. McIntosh 2005, A.J. Schraeder 2005, Al-don P. Schraeder 2009, Tom F. McCoy 2007, Matthew Schantz, and Bob Beshere are making audiences laugh in the sketch comedy troupe, Mon Frere. They perform regularly at the Idiot Box in downtown Greensboro. Besides their stage performances, this troupe is busy creating a television pilot for an upcoming Comedy Central contest. Benjamin A. Strickland 2007, Snow Camp, is currently performing with the Navy Jazz Band of the Mid-South all over the southern region. Hear his performance of "Here Comes Santa Claus" here!

Deanne A. Gerson 2008, Atlanta, Ga, has recently accepted the position of Health Educator with HealthMPowers in Norcross, Ga. Gerson will be helping to provide information, resources, skills and motivation to school staff, students and families so that they may take responsibility for their own health.

Erica R. Bledsoe 2009, Atlanta, Ga, works with The Aspire Group, selling tickets for NCAA Championship Events.

Christopher D. Fowler 1987, Aberdeen, is a member of the rock band, Street Party. They recently produced and debuted their initial CD, Beautifully Complicated. The band has started on the promotion circuit and will play in Southern Pines this Dec. For more information, click here.

Robert D. Stewart 2001, Deland, Fl, was recently named the Director of Admissions at Stetson University in Deland, Fl. Prior to this new job opportunity, Stewart had held the Director of Financial Aid position at Stetson University for two years.

Carolyn Watkins Flowers 2003, Browns Summit, was re-elected to the YWCA World Board as the World Treasurer at the YWCA World Conference held in July in Zurich, Switzerland. Flowers will represent North America and serve on this board for the next four years. In August, she was awarded with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the YWCA Greensboro at their annual meeting.

Danny G. Mackey 2003, Greensboro, was featured in the Nov 23-29, 2011 issue of Yes Weekly. The article focused on his job as Spazz, the Greensboro Grasshoppers mascot, and his day job as Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi's personal manager. Read more about Danny's success here!

Kristi L. Hunter 2005, Director of Student Activities and Orientation at Greensboro College, won the Free to Breathe 5K on Nov. 12, 2011 in Greensboro. With that victory, she clinched the championship in this year's Greensboro Race Series. Hunter was featured in a Q&A with News and Record editor Eddie Wooten in the Nov. 16, 2011 newspaper's blog. Dr. Rebecca F. Blomgren, Dean of Professional & Graduate Studies at Greensboro College, has been promoted to Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs. Along with her former duties, Dr. Blomgren will chair the graduate council, oversee graduate program development, assist in the coordination of events, and provide leadership for new initiatives.

Charmaine M. Finch resigned from her position in the Office of the President on Oct. 24, 2011. Join us in wishing her well in her future endeavors!

Congratulations to Julee Fortune Marshall, Administrative Assistant to the Faculty at Greensboro College, and to her husband Alan Marshall for Mr. Marshall's election to the Pleasant Garden Town Council on Nov. 8, 2011.

Bonnie Watson Ramos 2006, of San Antonio Tx, was named one of the 12 recipients of the San Antonio Mayoral/County Judge Outstanding Science and mathematics Teaching Award in Feb, 2011. Ramos is currently a secondary mathematics teacher in Northside ISD, San Antonio , Tx.

Tara J. Titcombe 2008 of Tempe, Az, was recently relocated to Arizona for the Project Manager position with US Airways magazine.

Tessa M. Hall 2010, Greensboro, has recently been promoted to the new Marketing Specialist position at Nationwide Marketing Group (NMG) in its RentDirect division. Robert Bickerstaff has returned to Greensboro College! After GC’s loss of coach Charlotte Dixon-Graves, Bickerstaff came back to GC and became the Head Women’s Lacrosse coach on Oct. 12, 2011.

Cheryl L. Brown, Professor of Sociology at Greensboro College, was featured in the NC Campus Compact's video, "An Invitation to Service Learning." Dr. Brown is one of 6 faculty members who have received the statewide Robert L. Sigmon Service-Learning Award because of the significant contributions she has made in the field of service-learning and community engagement.

Michelle Davis, Greensboro, was hired as the Senior Development Officer in Institutional Advancement at Greensboro College on Sept. 15, 2011.

Victoria Duggan is now the new Enrollment Assistant in Admissions and Chris Woelfel is the new Enrollment Data Manager at Greensboro College. They both started in Oct. 2011.

Robert P. Linville, former Greensboro College Golf Coach, claimed his first Carolinas PGA senior title of the year on Oct. 12, 2011.

Annette Orbert has been hired as the new Associate Director of Admissions at Greensboro College. She starts in this position Nov. 1, 2011.

Brandi Phillips was hired as the new Associate Director of Career Exploration and Development at Greensboro College. She started in July, 2011.

Marcus Phillips was hired on Sept. 30, 2011 to be an Admissions Counselor at Greensboro College.

Dr. Jerome Sauret, part time faculty member at Greensboro College in the Kinesiology division, successfully defended his dissertation at UNCG on Oct. 28, 2011.

Michael Simmons, Reference Librarian and Learning Commons Coordinator at Greensboro College, is leaving GC at the end of the fall semester to pursue further graduate study. Join us in wishing him luck in his future pursuits.

Reginald L. Wilson, current Director of Advising and Academic Success at Greensboro College, has resigned from his position starting Nov. 1, 2011. Wilson has accepted a position as the Assistant Dean of Student Development and Counseling at Pasco-Hernando Community College in New Port Richey, Fl. Join us in wishing him well in the future!

Dana Ziolkowski has been hired as the Director of Marketing/Communication at Greensboro College. She started in this position Sept. 19, 2011.

Charlotte Ray Derrough 1946 of Asheville, will join us in welcoming her son, Roger Derrough, as the speaker for Greensboro College's Senior Luncheon. Mr. Derrough is the founder and developer of the Earth Fare store chain.

Susan Hadley Cyr 1967, Durham, has retired after teaching reading for 7 years, being a counselor for 25 years with the NC Public School system, and most recently after being a counselor for 10 years with the Pittsylvania County School system in Va.

David C. Nichols 1980 and Luanne C. Nichols of Berryville, Va, have recently purchased land in Burlington, NC in preparation for moving back to NC. Their daughter Elizabeth graduated from GC two years ago and their son Taylor is currently a GC freshman football player.

Dr. J. Frank Howard 1984, recently wrote the book, "Say What? Understanding the Power of the Words We Speak" to help people understand how to phrase their words in a careful manner. Howard is currently the pastor at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church in Greensboro. Read more about Dr. Howard's book here.

Dr. Angela R. Ballentine 1987, Raleigh, has been named Interim President of Vance-Granville Community College in Henderson, Nc. Read more about Ballentine's career opportunity here.

Debra Brown Krupica 1988, Cumming, Ga, has opened Glazed and Fired, a paint your own pottery and art studio in Cumming, Ga. It offers canvas painting, PMC jewelry design classes, and open studio hours for pottery painting.

Jennifer McFarland McCaughey 1993, Amissville, Va, has accepted a position as an adjunct nursing instructor for Shenandoah University in Winchester, Va.

Jennifer Burton Ferriera 1996, Fort Mill, SC, gave her Sacred Music Recital at Greensboro College on Oct. 3, 2011. Burton has been involved with Opera Carolina, Piedmont Opera Theatre, and Central Piedmont Opera since her graduation from GC in 1996.

Christy Ann McBride Bailey 2002, Greensboro, was named the Assistant Principal at Western Rockingham Middle School on Aug. 1, 2011. Bailey also opened Rita's of Greensboro in July 2011 and hired 4 Greensboro College students to work at the store!

Sheresa Barbee Lacey 2004, Greensboro, is the recent co-owner of a cloth diaper business called All About Baby Boutique. They will soon be offering a variety of mom and baby education programs as well as products. They hope to open up a Greensboro store in addition to the web site that they currently offer. Ian P. Bailey 2008, Cornelius, is still working at Octagon but is now an account executive for the Bank of America account. Bailey's duties include managing multiple sport marketing programs for this account.

Julee Fortune Marshall and Cathy Jansen, former Secretaries of Odell Building and Cowan Building respectively, have been given an upgraded job title in order to reflect their current duties. Effective immediately, both Marshall and Jansen are Administrative Assistants to the Faculty.

Virginia Reid, former Secretary of Professional and Graduate Studies, has been promoted to Administrative Assistant to Academic Affairs. Her new position includes an office change to the third floor of Main Building and new duties related to academic affairs administration.

Lucile A. Wentworth 1932, celebrated her 100th birthday on Aug. 4, 2011 at Wynwood of Chapel Hill. Read more about Wentworth's life here.

Joyce Click Jensen 1968, of Ranchos De Taos, Nm. was recently featured in New Mexico monthly magazine in an article describing the influence that the Fred Harvey hospitality and rail company had on tourism and culture in the early 20th century. Jensen is currently the manager of a museum shop in the Millicent Rogers Museum in Taos, Nm.

Rev. D. Edwin Huss Jr. 1979, Thomasville, has joined the Shandon United Methodist Church as the Minister of Music and Arts. Read more about Huss' new job here.

Wanda Pope Currin 1984, Zebulon, has opened Currin's Art Corner, an art studio and gift shop, in Bunn, NC. She sells art supplies and teaches art lessons in drawing, watercolor, oils, acrylic, and sewing. Learn more about Currin's Art Corner here.

Jim "Spider" O'Gara 1997, Greensboro, is a Muscular Therapist with O'Gara Muscular Therapy.

Tyler K. Tobin 2006, Thomasville, was recently named the new assistant principal at Thomasville Middle School.

Bonnie L. Shade 2009, Greensboro has been a Health Care Assistant with Neurofeedback Associates since June of 2011.

Brick Crowder 2010, La Grange, started his new job as middle school math teacher on Aug. 23, 2011 at Bethel Christian Academy in Kinston. Read more about his new job here.

Lauren Childrey has been hired as the new Director of Student Health Services at Greensboro College. She officially started in the position on August 1, 2011.

Carolyn K. DeFrancesco has been named the Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Greensboro College. DeFrancesco has been with GC since Nov. 2009 as first the Director of Leadership Giving and then in 2010, as the Executive Director for Institutional Advancement.

Sheila Nayar, Associate Professor of English & Communications at Greensboro College, has accepted an offer to become the Assistant Director of the George Center for Honors Studies program at GC. Nayar started this new position Aug. 2, 2011.

Rachel Wahesh, Greensboro, has been appointed as the new Access Services Librarian at Greensboro College starting Aug. 2011. Wahesh was previously the Library Services Assistant at GC since Nov. 2010.

Erik Westberg has accepted the position as the Director of the Royce Reynolds Family Student Life Center. Westberg was the Assistant Building Manager of Reynolds this previous spring.

General Announcements

John Fred "Freddy" Johnson Jr. 1977, Greensboro, was among the 2011 inductees into the Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame announced by the Greensboro Sports Commission on June 23, 2011. They will formally be inducted at a banquet on Sept. 19, 2011. After graduation from GC, Johnson built a career at Greensboro Day School as the athletic director and head boys' basketball coach. He held these positions for 33 years. Johnson was also inducted into the Greensboro College Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009.

Jason B. Shoffner 2000, Cary, joined the SAS Institute in Cary, NC on July 18, 2011. Shoffner is the Application Developer 4 in the Management Information Systems, Enterprise Intelligence Team.

Maurio R. Hines 2008, Durham, received his MM degree from East Carolina University in May, 2011.

Robert Bickerstaff, Director of the Royce Reynolds Family Student Life Center at Greensboro College, resigned from his position with the college, effective at the end of July. Bickerstaff will be moving to Florida to pursue his Master's Degree and coach women's lacrosse at St. Leo University.

Dr. Cheryl L. Brown, Greensboro, has been appointed to a three-year term as the director of the International Studies program at Greensboro College. Dr. Brown is currently a professor of sociology at GC.

Ms. Cathy Vail, the current Proctor Hall Building Secretary at Greensboro College, has accepted an offer to become the new Executive Assistant to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty at GC. Vail will start this new position on Sept. 1, 2011.

Dr. John W. Woell, Greensboro, has resigned from his faculty position with Greensboro College. Woell was a Professor of Philosophy and Religion and director of The George Center for Honors Studies. He was also the chair of the Department of Religion at GC. He has accepted an administrative position in the honors college of University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Please join us in wishing him well in the future!

Virginia Roosa Van Tine 1970, Georgetown, DE, is currently the soprano section leader and soloist for the Southern Delaware Choral Society.

Kimberly White Money 1998, Winston Salem, has recently been named as the assistant principal at Davis-Townsend Elementary School in Davidson County. Read more about Money's new opportunity here.

Francois Theriault 2008, Quebec, Canada, started a business in Oct. 2010 called Surmesur, which sells men's clothing and fabric. It has recently won the Bourse Jeune Enterprise award and the Public Choice award. Theriault is in the process of opening another store in Quebec City and plans to open two more, one in Montreal and one in Toronto, within the next few months.

Dr. Richard Mayes, Jefferson-Pilot Professor of Biology at Greensboro College, was recently appointed as the new Associate Dean of the Faculty. Dr. Mayes has been with the college for over thirty-six years and will officially occupy this new post starting Aug. 17, 2011.

Terri McNaughton, Executive Assistant to the Vice President for Academic Affairs/Dean of the Faculty, has tendered her resignation from Greensboro College effective Sept. 1, 2011. Join us in wishing her the best as she pursues other interests.

Sheila Nayar, Associate Professor of English & Communication Studies at Greensboro College, was recently awarded the 2011 Marshall McLuhan Award for Outstanding Book in the Field of Media Ecology. Her book, Cinematically Speaking: The Orality-Literacy Paradigm for Visual Narrative, was published by Hampton Press in 2010.

Josh Aylor was recently named as the new Network/Systems Administrator at Greensboro College. He recieved both his B.S. in Computer Information Systems and his B.A. in Sociology from Concord University. Aylor comes to us from the position of Lead Network Administrator/Associate Director of Networking at Barnard College of Columbia University.

Doris Reynolds Edwards 1959, Charlotte, was recognized on March 27, 2011 by the Myers Park United Methodist Church with an anthem in her honor. Edwards has been dedicated to bringing harmony to the church through the Women's Choir for 15 years as a director and active member.


Dot Calvert Ivey 1961 of Richmond, VA, was one of two representatives from the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church to attend an international Roundtable held in Sao Paulo, Brazil on April 1-3, 2011. The Roundtable discussed the feasibility of adapting a successful Brazilian Methodist Church at-risk children program for use with children in other countries. As a result of these discussions, similar programs will be started in Mozambique and a few countries in Latin America within the next year. See a picture below of Ivey's time in Brazil. Susan Jarvis Goldstein 1969, Greensboro, assumed the position of Executive Director at Beth David Synagogue in Greensboro on May 1, 2011.


Cynthia J. Reece 1977, San Elena, Belize, Central America is the Program Manager for the Institute for Sustainable International Studies, ISIS Belize. For more information on this organization, click here. She was married to W. Steven Boone 1975 for 15 years and they had one child, Jason Boone, who was recently married and now lives in Charlotte.


Kristen Brown Williams 1994, Greensboro, was inducted into the Greensboro College Hall of Fame on April 9, 2011. Williams played volleyball and received many outstanding awards while she was a student at GC. Read more about Williams’s newest honor here.


Edward D. McKinney 1995, Wilkesboro, received his Doctor of Ministry from Hood Theological Seminary in Salisbury on May 14, 2011. Effective June 28, he will be appointed to Glencoe United Methodist Church and will be moving to Summerfield, NC.




Amy Jordan Jobe 1999, McLeansville, graduated from UNC-Greensboro with a Masters of Education in Birth-Kindergarten on May 6, 2011. Jobe was also inducted into the Kappa Omicron Nu Honor Society through the Human Development and Family Studies Department.

On May 8, 2011, the USA South Athletic Conference announced its inductees into the Hall of Fame. These included former GC golf coach James "Jim" H. Locke Sr. from Southport,

Clarence F. Caldwell GC class of 1977 from Fayetteville, and Andrew N. McMurry GC class of 1985 from Hickory. All three were previously inducted into Greensboro College Hall of Fame.



Martha Bunch, Greensboro, and Lem H. Cox, Greensboro, were recently named as the two recipients of the Nannie Lee Smith Award. Mrs. Bunch is the Assistant Vice President for Academic Administration at Greensboro College. Mr. Cox has been associated with Greensboro College as both a volunteer and employee since 1994.



Julee Marshall, secretary of Odell Building at Greensboro College, shares an event that her mom, a Master Sergeant and World War II Veteran, was involved in on May 18, 2011:



"This morning another Triad "Flight of Honor" carrying about 75 World War II
Veterans left from GSO on its way to Washington DC. Among them were my mom, Reva Fortune (The Master Sergeant) and my Aunt Lucy Pauquette (Corporal). Channel 12 WXII interviewed them both since Mom is the oldest veteran on the flight (age 94) and Aunt Lucy is the only female Marine on the flight. It was an amazing
event as they were with greeted flags, motorcycle patriots, a vintage jeep and
special military escorts. A singing group dressed in period uniforms sang songs
from the 1940's. As the plane taxied onto the runway, the airport fire trucks
sprayed an arch of water for it to pass under. I understand that the arrival in
Washington is also quite special, as will be the return this evening."






Edith L. Shepherd, associate professor of Spanish at Greensboro College, retired from her position on May 8, 2011. She was awarded emerita status at GC's 2011 Commencement ceremony.


W. Christopher Lock was recently named as the new Information Technology Support Specialist at Greensboro College. Lock has had experience with technology from working at Downtown Middle School in Winston-Salem and at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC.


Dr. Craven E. Williams, Greensboro, has recently been named the new Ministerial Associate for Pastoral Care at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greensboro. Read more about Williams' new opportunity here.

Daniese Hedrick Smith 1978, Brown Summit, was recently named North Carolina's Ag in the Classroom Teacher of the Year. Smith applies agricultural concepts to lessons within the second-grade class she teaches at Alamance Elementary.

Mark T. Fales 1992, Greensboro, has launched a new website specializing in women’s jewelry and accessories. Check out Fales' new business here.

Sheila Evans Kurtiak 1995, Gibsonville, recently passed the state life insurance exam for NC. She will be selling annuities and life insurance products for Suntrust Bank.

Jennifer Moore Bradley 1998, Brown Summit, has been managing Global Marketing Operations at the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, NC for over 12 years.

Kate E. Roberton 2005 from State College, PA, will graduate from Penn State's Smeal College of Business with her MBA in Marketing and Supply Chain on May 7, 2011. After graduation, Roberton plans to move to Cincinnati, OH, where she will work with dunnhumbyUSA in their marketing consulting/shopper behavior area.

Prof. Jane C. Girardi from Greensboro has accepted an offer to become Greensboro College's new Assistant Director of the TESOL program. Previously, Girardi was an Assistant Professor of German and an Academic Counselor at GC.

Dr. Cynthia B. Hanson, Sr. Professor of Marketing at Greensboro College, has recently tendered her resignation from GC in order to accept an appointment at High Point University. Dr. Hanson contributed to the growth and development of Greensboro College in many ways and will be missed.

Dr. Milton E. Reece, Oak Island, died April 5, 2011 from failing health. At the time of his death, Reece was a Distinguished Professor of Physical Education and Recreation Emeritus at Greensboro College. During his tenure at GC, he taught in the Physical Education department, chaired the Education department, and coached both basketball and golf. (obituary)

John L. Hinson Jr. 2009, Lexington, received his Master of Music degree from East Carolina University in Dec. 2010. He has recently been hired as the Director of Music at Tyro United Methodist Church in Lexington, NC.



Robert Lowe, the Assistant Athletic Director for Communications at Greensboro College, has resigned from his position with the college effective March 11, 2011. Lowe was instrumental in shaping the information technology for the Athletic Program at Greensboro College.



O. Ray Martin, Liberty, has resigned from his post of Full Professor of Art and chairman of the Art Department at Greensboro College. Join us in wishing Professor Martin well in all his future endeavors!



Dr. April Najjaj, Durham, has resigned from her position as Associate Professor of History at Greensboro College effective at the beginning of the fall semester of 2011. Dr. Najjaj will be pursuing a faculty appointment at Mount Olive College.

Shiloh Peace was born to Dana Hartman Grove 1999 and Stacy Grove of Washington, IL on Dec. 24, 2010. She is the third child, following brother Tanner, age 3, and sister Elisabeth, age 21 months.

General Announcements

Mildred Russell Smith 1940 of Troy has recently been moved into a skilled nursing home in Montgomery County, NC at 90 years of age.

Virginia Hurt Breeden 1945 of Virginia Beach, Va, responded to the January 2011 PrideLine with an e-mail informing us at GC that she has been in contact with her former roommate and classmate Jean Cherry Gillam 1945 of Windsor.

The Rev. Randolph W. Kanipe 1982, of Bogart, Ga., was appointed to Watkinsville First UMC in June 2010 after having been at Salem UMC for 8 years. In August, he earned his second-degree black belt. Kanipe was also inducted into the United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame for his ministry to community children in the "Karate Kids for Christ" organization. He is currently completing his doctoral studies at Asbury seminary in Lexington, Ky.

Stacy A. Jarvis 1999 of Belle Mead, N.J., recently received her master's degree in Chemistry from Lehigh University.

Ryan W. Nelsen 2000 from Altrincham, Cheshire, United Kingdom, recently signed a deal
with the Blackburn Rovers football (soccer) team of the Premiere League to remain as the team captain until 2013. Nelsen joined Blackburn in 2005 and captained his native New Zealand's national team in last year's World Cup. Just last month, he was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to football. Read more about Nelsen's great opportunity here.

Rev. Howard A. Chubbs, Greensboro, was the recipient of the 2011 Human Rights Medal Award on Feb 1, 2011. This honor is awarded annually by North Carolina A&T State University to recognize people who have endeavored to correct social injustice in their lifetimes. In the late 1960s, Rev. Chubbs stood by the side of then-A&T college president Dr. Lewis C. Dowdy as the National Guard marched onto the campus. Since then, he has made every effort to provide pastoral and civic contributions toward society, ultimately making this world a better place. Rev. Chubbs is a current Board of Visitors member at Greensboro College.
