General Announcements
Jo Usher Steel 1949, Aiken, SC, moved to Aiken in 1994 to be near her daughter and granddaughter. Her son joined her in 2009.
Stephen Brockway 1964, Council Bluffs, IA, will close his life-long career as a theatre director in July of 2013 as Artistic Director of Kanesville Inc's song-'n-dance musical, Come Home to Kanesville [Iowa]. After GC Broc served 6 years as a Russian linguist with Army Intelligence, earned a BA from BYU and an MA+60 from Minnesota. Any GC technicians, actor-singer-dancers looking for an interesting summer should contact him. Kanesville is an intergenerational production and leading male and female roles are open.
Rev. Dr. Joseph C. Seymour Jr. 1969, Davidson, has been the Senior Pastor for Davidson United Methodist for the past ten years, and also has two books out currently: "Lost but Making  Excellent  Time," and "Marking the Gospel." Available for sale at www.wipfandstock.com.
Rev. John W. Van Tine 1969, Milford, DE, has retired after 42 years of Pastoring United Methodist churches. He and Ginny are living in the house Ginny grew up in.
G. Darryl Waller 1983, Alexandria, VA, after working in Santa Fe, N.M., has recently moved to the Washington, D.C. area and is working for the American Institute for Research as the Music Content Specialist.
Anne Parris Ogilvy 1994, Cumming, Ga, was named as the 2011 School Counselor of the Year for the state of Georgia.  Ogilvy was also one of the six finalists in the running for the title of 2012 National School Counselor of the Year.
Debra McAlexander Chaney 1997, Bassett, VA, received certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in Early Childhood through Young Adulthood/ Exceptional Needs Specialist in Nov. 2012. She teaches Special Education in Henry County, VA.
Lara Southerland Berich 1999, Bloomington, IN, after 6 years working with the Indiana University Bloomington Theatre Department as Cutter/Draper and Costume Technology instructor (and seven summers working with the Santa Fe Opera), she will be joining the Oregon Shakespeare Festival costume shop as one of their Cutter/ Drapers the day after Christmas. She first decided that doing exactly that was a life goal while sitting in a computer lab at Greensboro College in 1998. "Time does fly!", she says.
Rebecca E. Palsha-Hopkins 2000, Anchorage, AK, was on the online cover of the New York Times's website Nov. 22 with photos of her family. Nicholas A. Scarpola 2008, Fallston, MD, as an assistant coach with the women's basketball at Harford Community College, is 5-0 and 1-0 in conference play. They lead all of NJCAA in points/g 98.4. They managed to get some national recognition from NJCAA and are 2 points shy of being ranked in the top-25 in NJCAA D1 women's basketball poll.
John L. Hinson Jr. 2009, Lexington, has become the new director of the Community Christmas Candlelight Choir of Lexington, an 83-year-old tradition. Read more here.

Mabel Cornelius Chilton 1946, Statesville, in the death of her husband, J. Banks Chilton, who passed away July 14, 2010 after 61 years of wonderful marriage together. "Life without him is not the same, but I'm doing well and have many memories. God blessed us that he did not have a long, lingering illness, nor did he have to have final care in a Nursing Home. He was a devout Christian and loyal supporter of Broad Street UMC- taught Sunday School and was a tenar soloist in our church choir for 51 years."
Barbara Shrum Blanton 1947, Lincolnton, in the death of her husband, Leonard Blanton.  Together they have 4 children, 6 grandchildren, and 3 great-grand children. Their granddaughter, Meredith Blanton Gaines and her husband Chris are also GC alumni.
