Nicka Thornton, Greensboro, died on July 17, 2012. She was the Director of Career Services at GC for 11 years.   (Obituary)

Dr. Sara King Smith 1939, Greensboro, died on July 2, 2012.  Dr. Sara King Smith, 1939, Greensboro, died peacefully on July 2, 2012 at Pennybryn Nursing Home in High Point, NC. She is survived by daughters Jacqueline S. Dagenet  of  Greensboro and Patricia Coburn of Austin, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, and daughter  Gwendolyn  Smith  Price. She was a graduate of Greensboro College and received a Ph.D. in French Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She retired from Asheboro High School after 36 years in the teaching profession. Donations in her memory may be made to the Methodist Children's Home, 1001 Reynolda Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27104.  (Obituary)

Susan K. Shaw 1967, Manassas, VA, died on July 4, 2012. As one of her fellow classmates, Susan Page Percy remembers her, "Susie taught school in Prince William County or Manassas Va Schools for 33 years and was a beloved member of the community. In 1987 she was named by the Washington Post as a Teacher of the Year in the Washington DC area. No obituary or award could ever have captured the huge personality that was Susie.  She was one of GC's really memorable and extraordinary characters.  As an English teacher, her standards were the highest.  As a human being, her love for her students and teaching came first and foremost.  As a reader and writer she possessed, as those who knew and loved her know, the most colorful vocabulary--much of it unprintable here-- and a straightforward approach to life and honesty that was rare on this earth."  (Obituary)

General Announcements

Rachel M. Buie 1948, Asheville, enjoyed the recent Alumni Event in Asheville on May 17, 2012.

Georgia Hayes Niven 1948, Lexington. Georgia's husband, William Edward Niven, was recognized by the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching with the William Edward Niven Honored Educator Scholarship, fully funded by former students Jerry Lea  and Elizabeth Long Cole.  The scholarship will benefit teachers in Caswell County.

Ruth Taylor Reynolds 1948, Roanoke, VA, now resides in a Health Care Facility. She is still enjoying her 1948 Echo.

Carolyn Stanford Hicklin 1953, Chester, SC, and husband Cloud recently attended his 50th Medical Class Reunion at Medical University of SC in Charleston.  The "Golden Grads" were treated royally along with their spouses.

Betty Stanford Bodkin 1957, and Rev. Tom Bodkin, Raleigh, have received the 2012 Heritage Award given by the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina and the North Carolina Baptist Foundation for their years of service to NC Baptists.

Peggy Gibbs Burton 1957, Reidsville, and her husband, retired Rev. John (Methodist) are involved with the Rockingham County Historical Society Museum and Archives and will be opening an exhibit in the 1909 Courthouse in Wentworth in August.

Ginger Williams Crites 1996, Archdale, earned her Post-Master's Certificate in School Administration from UNCG in August of 2011.  She was also named Assistant Principal at Southeastern Randolph Middle School in Ramseur.

Clyde O. DeGraw 1975, Greensboro, will be inducted into the Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame in September.

Brenda Kidd Lacalmontie 1995, Elkridge, MD  Brenda has been offered a position as an English teacher at Lycée Rochambeau, the French International School, in Washington D.C.

Ginger Williams Crites 1996, Archdale, earned her Post-Master's Certificate in School Administration from UNCG in August of 2011.  She was also named Assistant Principal at Southeastern Randolph Middle School in Ramseur.

Kathryn Elaine Ormond 2000, Millersville, MD  Kat is now an Account Manager at DCi Management, founded in York, PA in 1982.  DCi is a full-service exhibit company specializing in tradeshow management, fulfillment & technology.

Wendy E. Southard 2008, Madison, was named Rockingham County Schools' 2012-2013 teacher of the year.

Erica D. Smith 2009, Eden  graduated from the medical technology program at Alamance Community College with honors in July 2011, and passed her national board certification exam in September 2011 to become a registered Medical Lab Technologist with the American Society of Clinical Pathology.  She has been employed as a Medical Laboratory Technologist at Danville Regional Medical Center in Danville, VA since July 2011.

Chad J. Adams 2012, Yadkinville, is a Personal Trainer at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

Starling A. Aguilar Jimenez 2012, San Pablo, Costa Rica, is an English as a Second Language Teacher for Chatham County Schools.

Diana Alonso-Lopez 2012, Greensboro, is an English as a K-12 Second Language Teacher for Patrick County Schools in Virginia.

Anyela P. Ariza Ibanez 2012, Garland, TX, is a Fifth Grade Bilingual Teacher for Garland Independent School District.

During her retirement, Linda plans to relax on her patio watching bluebirds, tend to her garden, scrapbook, work on a genealogy project, and quilt with friends. She will be missed!
